Assessing the social impact of build-to-rent developments

In 2024, the Quality of Life Foundation partnered with the British Property Federation (BPF) and The Association for Rental Living (ARL) to examine the social impact of build-to-rent developments on residents and their communities.

Drawing on insights from 297 residents across three sites – from Get Living, Greystar, and Long Harbour/Way of Life – this report reveals how build-to-rent can enhance wellbeing and foster stronger social connections.

What we found

The research shows how build-to-rent developments can:

  • Strengthen social ties through well-designed spaces and amenities
  • Promote long-term community stewardship
  • Enrich local areas through cultural activities and engagement

The report also sets out recommendations to help the sector improve.
