Measuring Mass Timber
The Quality of Life Foundation collaborated with dRMM, Edinburgh Napier University, and Built by Nature to explore the environmental and wellbeing benefits of mass timber buildings.
Drawing on detailed case studies of five mass timber buildings across various sectors – including education, infrastructure, worship, residential, and commercial – this report highlights how mass timber can significantly reduce carbon emissions while improving the health and comfort of building occupants.
What we found
The research reveals that mass timber buildings can:
- Reduce carbon emissions by an average of 50% compared to industry equivalents
- Foster healthier environments that enhance comfort and relaxation for residents
The report also includes recommendations for developers and designers to incorporate mass timber more widely.
Why it matters
These findings offer compelling evidence that mass timber is a crucial solution for reducing carbon emissions while creating spaces that promote the health and wellbeing of building occupants. The research supports the need for a wider adoption of mass timber as a sustainable building material with clear environmental and social benefits.
