Post-occupancy evaluation

Resident Review: a new way to do post-occupancy evaluation

Resident Review is a bespoke and in-depth post-occupancy evaluation service. It combines a site visit by our researchers with quantitative and qualitative data gathered from residents (both online and face-to-face) to give comprehensive insights into how people experience their homes and neighbourhoods, which can be used for strategic decision-making.

To be able to make informed, strategic decisions about improving existing homes and neighbourhoods or delivering new ones, you need a deep understanding of what people want and need, and of how people experience the homes and neighbourhoods they’re living in.

Our Resident Review service provides you with a way for residents and communities to let you know what they think and feel about where they live. Crucially, it also makes suggestions about how the design, delivery and management of the development may be contributing.

In doing so, it enables you to improve both their current neighbourhoods and your future developments.

The service uses the Quality of Life Framework to speak with residents and to assess neighbourhoods. Using the Framework’s health and wellbeing lens means you get a deep insight into how well the places you create care for impact on people’s quality of life in the long term.

What are the benefits of carrying out a Quality of Life Resident Review?

Our Resident Review service provides a unique opportunity for those creating and caring for homes and neighbourhoods to learn from residents’ lived experiences.

By carrying out a Resident Review, we can help you identify how current and future places can be improved to have positive impacts on people’s health and wellbeing.

This is not a run-of-the-mill post-occupancy evaluation; we’ve developed it out of our evidence-based Quality of Life Framework, and it assesses homes and neighbourhoods against the things we know people need from the places that they live to enjoy happy, healthy lives. It can also lead to benchmarking across your portfolio, alongside national data sets and against the rest of the industry.

Importantly, we design each Resident Review based on the needs of the client and on the specific contexts in which we are working. We provide expertise in research, engagement and urban design to make sure you get the most you possibly can from your investment.

Our recommendations are practical and enable better-informed decision making about the homes and neighbourhoods we’re reviewing, and for those you will build in the future.

We can design a package to suit your budget and requirements, using data we collect through our own engagement activities, analysing your own data, or using data sourced from a third party.

The evidence we provide will help you to:

  • Build trust with residents and wider stakeholders
  • Demonstrate the value of investing in creating sustainable communities
  • Substantiate and deepen the social impact of what you do
  • Benchmark within a portfolio and across the industry
  • Mitigate the risk of building socially unsustainable places in the future

We carry out Resident Reviews both in new developments and established neighbourhoods, making this service useful to both developers and housing associations.

Piloting post-occupancy evaluation

We launched our Resident Review service in 2022, having completed pilots in seven neighbourhoods across England. We published a report outlining what we learned and the processes we went through.

We’ve carried out more reviews since then, but the report still makes an interesting read and gives you an understanding of the kinds of insights we can gain through the service
